Flies Insects

How to get rid of houseflies at home?

← Back Get a quote

Houseflies are one of the many nuisances that affect residences throughout Quebec, but don't worry, because this guide will help you solve your infestation!

What is a housefly?

The housefly is the most common species of fly. Houseflies are dark grey in color, with small spots of golden hairs on their backs and long wings, and measure 8 mm in length .

Pollen beetles are parasites of earthworms that develop in areas with fertile soil. They do not spread disease. They are generally considered a nuisance because they enter houses in the fall through cracks and crevices.

Houseflies lay their eggs in the soil or in animal droppings. The larvae remain in the soil and hatch when the weather warms up in spring. The larvae then burrow into the bodies of earthworms and develop into houseflies. This life cycle typically lasts between 27 and 39 days.

How can I tell if I have a housefly infestation?

Houseflies leave small, dark-colored droppings on walls or windows that can be difficult to clean. Another problem is that if they die in places like wall cavities or false ceilings, they can attract other pests such as beetles, also known as stored product insects (SPIs).

What causes houseflies to be present in homes?

Houseflies typically begin to develop in the spring and summer, and when autumn arrives, these pests seek refuge indoors. In winter, they are generally only seen inside houses, where they wait for the cold weather. When houseflies congregate in the least-used areas of your home, they form a swarm.

How can I prevent and control a housefly infestation?

There isn't much you can do after autumn. The best thing to do, therefore, is to put a prevention strategy in place .

The following are natural methods of pest control. Pesticides pose safety and health problems . If these natural prevention and control strategies are ineffective, contact an exterminator .

Use a vacuum cleaner

Adult houseflies don't reproduce or lay eggs in your home, so if they can't find a way out, they'll simply die there. Many people use a vacuum cleaner to suck up dead flies that have entered through window and door frames. Unless you have a serious problem, this may be all you need.

Because they move slowly, they are easy to vacuum or even sweep up. They gather on windowsills, looking for a way out. For hard-to-reach or small areas, you can use a small handheld vacuum. Just be sure to empty your vacuum cleaner as soon as possible. Empty it outside rather than releasing them inside where they will quickly return.

Wait for spring

If you think the infestation is small enough to be only a minor nuisance, you can simply wait until spring. Houseflies are more common in the fall and winter because they seek warmth and shelter when the weather gets colder. The main problem, however, is that they will likely return, and this won't solve your problem in the long run.

Eliminate food sources

Houseflies love rotting food, and the sweeter it is, the better. Make sure perishable food is eaten or thrown away before it attracts flies into your home.

If you have pets, be sure to remove food and water from their bowls after they've used them overnight to prevent them from eating them. When disposing of food and water, make sure your bin and waste container are securely closed.

Use sticky fly strips

Fly strips work if you have a spot in an inconspicuous area. Many people dislike them because insects get stuck to them in plain sight. This is definitely not something you want in your kitchen or dining room. That said, they will attract and kill houseflies for sure.

Remove standing water

Since flies need surface water to survive, good drainage helps prevent them. You can contribute to a major insect problem if you have a lot of standing water or soggy areas in your lawn.

Poor lawn drainage is a problem that needs to be addressed. Remember, however, that just because the infestation is inside the house doesn't mean the problem is outside. An unkempt lawn is a breeding ground for houseflies.

If you have a damp problem in your basement, you can replace or install a sump pump and/or drainage pipes. A little digging around the house and lawn maintenance also help with drainage! The drainage system should be inspected for blockages and other problems .

Seal the cracks and holes

Seal your house:

  • Houseflies enter your home through the smallest cracks or crevices.
  • Warm attics offering plenty of space to hide from predators are particularly attractive to these flies.
  • Houseflies love to hang out in the gaps between the curtains.

Houseflies emerge from gaps in the walls and move towards windows when the weather warms up during the day in winter. This is when you are most likely to see them.

Cracks can be sealed in various ways:

  • A simple caulking gun and caulking costing less than $5 a tube can be used to seal small gaps and cracks.
  • Sprayed insulating foam can be used to seal larger gaps.
  • At nightfall, use a flashlight to check that your house is not cracked and that light is not passing through.
  • If you are alone, another option is to set up a bright light in a room, then go outside to look for cracks.
  • You can mark the locations with chalk and come back the next day to seal them.

True prevention can only be achieved by preventing houseflies from entering your home.

Contact an exterminator

If you have a severe infestation, a professional exterminator can use residual spray products to target all active flies. Companies like RD will help you implement effective pest control strategies and get rid of your infestation once and for all.

RD offers housefly control  services to ensure your home, business, or farm is free of houseflies. Frequent inspections are the best way to guarantee your property remains pest-free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will houseflies eventually disappear on their own?

The houseflies that entered your home in the fall to overwinter will remain hidden and only emerge during warm, sunny winter days to try to get out through your windows. They will eventually leave when temperatures start to rise, but they will never completely disappear if you leave them alone .

Do houseflies come back every year?

Several species of flies can be found in large numbers in homes during the spring and fall. As temperatures begin to drop in early autumn, houseflies commonly enter properties in search of a warm place to hibernate. Attics and roofs of houses and farm buildings are frequently used for this purpose.

These flies will hibernate until temperatures begin to rise in the spring if they are left undisturbed. It is not uncommon for these flies to leave an odor that attracts houseflies year after year to lay ever-increasing numbers of eggs.
