Springtails

How to exterminate springtails?

← Back Get a quote

Present on Earth for 400 million years, springtails are small living organisms that inhabit the soil. They often have a discreet presence and take refuge in rocks, tree trunks, basements, and other dwellings in all corners of the world. They were previously classified as primitive insects, but today they form a distinct class within the hexapods, divided into more than 3,000 species.

You may have already noticed tiny creatures on the surface of your potting soil, jumping to a height 100 times their own size. These are most likely springtails, which you disturbed by watering. These creatures emerge from an egg at a smaller, adult stage. They continue to molt throughout their lives and have a very short life cycle, which explains their spectacular invasive potential. That's why in this article we explain how to identify them and the consequences of their presence. We also share tips for better controlling their infestation in your home.

How to identify springtails?

SpringtailsĀ , also known as snow fleas, are arthropods that live in the soil. They measure a few millimeters and rarely exceed 1 cm, and can be several colorsĀ .

They have antennae on their heads that resemble eyes, but they are blind, and their bodies can be covered in silk. They have no wings and are characterized by a ventral tube that allows them to adhere to smooth surfaces, as well as to breathe and suck up liquids.Ā

The furca or furcula, a forked appendage folded over the abdomen, is used to propel them forward to escape danger. It allows them to jump to a surprisingly high height relative to their size. This jump is completely uncontrolled, and they land just about anywhere.

This is one of the most numerous living beings on Earth, encompassing various species found in all corners of the world. You can usually spot it when you're watering your plants; it jumps, sometimes up to a meter high, to avoid flooding.

Signs of springtail infestationĀ ,Why are springtails in my house?Ā

Springtails take in the moist organic matter of plants, especially in mulch and pots, and make it their preferred habitat. They often settle near dead organic matter. If weather conditions become inhospitable for springtails, they will seek out moisture and may settle around swimming pools or in muddy areas. In extreme weather conditions, they will take refuge in houses in search of warm, humid spaces.

Where can we find them?

Springtails aren't particularly fussy about their habitat; they can be found in forests, mosses, rocks, trees, and more. They prefer damp places with abundant organic matter. In homes, they can infest several rooms, and their presence is often noticed during construction work when the cement or plaster is still damp. Their favorite spots are basements, kitchens, bathrooms, and near plants.

How can we recognize them?Ā

Here are the signs that can help identify the presence of a springtail infestation:

  • A cluster of thousands of springtails stuck together
  • A cluster of black dots that looks like pepper

Springtails live in groups, and their numbers can reach 400,000 per square meter. They often hide in the soil and can be seen in sunlight. They move in swarms of several million and can be spotted in the snow, along roadsides, as an accumulation of black dots that contrast with the color of the snow. In fact, they are often called snow fleas for this reason.

Do springtails pose a danger?

Don't worry, springtails arecompletely harmless to humans. The problem is that they easily manage to infiltrate houses thanks to their small size. They multiply considerably inside the house, and that's when their presence becomes a nuisance.Ā

Their ecological role

Springtails are not considered a threat to your health or the health of your garden. In fact, they contribute to the health and quality of the soil. They consume waste, fungi, and algae that are harmful to the soil. They participate in the decomposition of organic matter while releasing essential minerals for plants.

Their role is very important inĀ maintaining microbial balanceĀ . Furthermore, they serve as food for various animals. Thus, in their natural environment, they play a beneficial role and should not be eliminated.

How to prevent a springtail infestation?

The presence of springtails in the house can be a nuisance. Here are some simple and effective tips to control their proliferation:Ā

  • Ventilate all rooms in the house regularly
  • Install a dehumidifier or a fan
  • Eliminating mold, especially in the bathroom
  • Repairing water leaks
  • Get rid of any damp or moldy items.
  • Remove the dead leaves around the house
  • Watering indoor plants
  • Reduce the use of mulch around the house

Protecting yourself against a springtail infestation

Some common misconceptions, such as using bleach or boiling water and insecticides, are completely ineffective against springtails. In fact, they are highly resistant to many insecticides and tend to multiply rapidly if not properly treated.

Outside your house

For your outdoor plants, you must accept the presence of these small, beneficial creatures. Their presence contributes to the well-being of your garden. You can opt to use certain insecticidal soaps, but you risk harming other organisms that are just as essential to the health of your plants. Just be careful that they don't infiltrate your home and reduce the use of mulch around your house.

Inside your houseĀ

If you want to reduce the number of springtails in your houseplants, dry them out. Springtails prefer moist soil, and letting the potting mix dry out will cause them to die. There's no need to use insecticides. Dehumidifying the various infested areas in your home is generally the best way to combat a springtail infestation.

Don't hesitate to call on an expert.

If humidity levels are high, the springtail life cycle is approximately three weeks, leading to an impressive multiplication rate. At this stage, their elimination becomes virtually impossible without the help of a professional exterminator.
